I saw a girl walking down the street yesterday and she was so on point that I almost drove off the road. Here is what she was wearing: A flirty floral printed swing dress, a navy leather jacket, black tights and orange Nikes. While this may sound like a homeless person or a bad hipster joke, I assure you it worked. Sneakers are appealing for many reasons; most obvious being comfort. Sneakers and dresses are obscenely appealing due to the fact that you are able to cheat the system. Sporting a pair of five-inch stilettos still has its place at fancy cocktail parties and stuffy dinners, but the days of skinning your heels on the regular are over. Sneakers have been in for more than a few seasons now, so I’m not delivering any ground-breaking news. However, early Fall has arrived and it’s time to seize the moment and try out this look if you have been avoiding it but secretly fantasizing about it. Now for my tips:
Here’s what I know:
Color matters. The most risky sneaker is an all white sneaker. This look only works in extreme climates on very specific people. The most tried and true is a black Nike. Printed sneakers and slip-ons are everywhere and if you make them the statement of your outfit, they will work for you.
Play around with the trend. The platform sneaker used to confuse me and then I tried one on a few days ago at Intermix and I liked it. I liked it a lot. (You can check out my instagram for the pic and buy the shoe here) I have yet to learn my lesson of don’t judge a book by its cover or an item off the rack. You have to put it on and see if you connect with it.
Size doesn’t matter. I don’t care if you’re 5 feet nothing and “never wear flats” or if you are curvy and sneakers are “not flattering” on you. Please throw that sh*$ out the window and get over yourself. Bigger girls can report to Katie Sturino’s insta @The12ishstyle and short beauties can check out Melanie pace @MelaniePace21 for inspiration. Do not let your size or body type impede you from doing you. (Btw, I need to repeat this mantra to myself constantly. You are not alone)
Layer up. Fall is here and it’s time for layers. It’s also time for tights. Wear your sneaks with some tights, a simple skirt and plain white button down then add from there. Scarfs can step it up a notch. A leather jacket under a longer overcoat always looks chic. Try these look with a sneaker and watch as people bow down in amazement.
Swagger matters. This one is most important. I’m not denying that this sneaker and dress-up clothes look may in fact be a trend. It’s not your time to play it safe with this look. Just wear it with confidence. Trust me… swagger goes a very very long way. (Note: if you don’t have confidence, fake it till you make it)
